For any given keyword, it takes into account the top ranking\u00a0websites&#8217; overall strength, what topics they&#8217;re considered authoritative in, their link structure, keyword relevancy and other on-page features, anchor text relevancy, and many other factors (around 200 in all). We then analyze how typical pages on your\u00a0website compare for all of these factors to assess whether a page on your website would be competitive <a href=\"http:\/\/canirank.freshdesk.com\/support\/solutions\/articles\/110999-what-are-the-existing-content-and-new-content-report\"><em>if it were targeting that specific keyword<\/em><\/a>. The result is a much more accurate and nuanced concept of keyword\u00a0difficulty which doesn&#8217;t just say &#8220;hard&#8221; or &#8220;easy&#8221;: it gauges how far a respective website would need to go to become competitive. With refinement, we could\u00a0stop talking about keyword difficulty and start talking about the much more useful &#8220;<strong>Cost-to-rank<\/strong>&#8220;: how much time and money one\u00a0would need to put into an SEO campaign to make a\u00a0website competitive for a given keyword.<\/p>\n<p>For example, SEOBook.com\u00a0and QuickenLoans.com are both hugely authoritative websites with a tremendous amount of ranking power. But SEOBook\u00a0would have a lot of work to do if they wanted to rank for &#8220;home loan&#8221;, while &#8220;SEO&#8221; would be a huge challenge for QuickenLoans. Both keywords have comparable difficulty, but each website would have a very different cost-to-rank. CanIRank&#8217;s Ranking Probability captures this difference while traditional keyword difficulty tools do not. Assuming that a\u00a0keyword is relevant to your business,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pay_per_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">advertiser Cost Per Click<\/a> serves as\u00a0an excellent proxy for a keyword&#8217;s commercial value. Terms that are likely to generate sales&#8211; like &#8220;mesothelioma attorney&#8221; ($167 CPC) or &#8220;serviced office London&#8221; ($43 CPC)&#8211; have a high Cost Per Click because advertisers (other businesses like yours) know they can make money from people searching those terms.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we compare Ranking Probability to Keyword Value to come up with a <strong>Keyword ROI<\/strong>. In doing this calculation, we have to consider that Ranking Probability is not linear: a $1,000 Keyword Value is exactly twice as valuable\u00a0as a $500 keyword, but a 40% Ranking Probability is a lot more than twice as difficult as\u00a0an 80% Ranking Probability (i.e., much more than double the Cost-to-rank).<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget that ROI numbers will vary depending upon the website&#8211; a newer website that lacks the Website Strength to compete for anything but long-tail keywords\u00a0may have their highest ROI keywords in the 40s, while a big brand website will likely find\u00a0opportunities with an ROI over 100.<\/p>\n<h2>How to use Keyword ROI in your SEO &amp; Content Marketing Campaigns<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at some of CanIRank&#8217;s keyword suggestions for my favorite example site, <a href=\"http:\/\/yogadvds.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YogaDVDs.net<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div id=\"attachment_105\" style=\"width: 703px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/canirank.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-07-29-at-9.59.18-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105\" class=\"wp-image-105\" src=\"http:\/\/canirank.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-07-29-at-9.59.18-PM-1024x574.png\" alt=\"Some keywords score well because they're &quot;low-hanging fruit&quot;, others because they're very high value.\" width=\"693\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-07-29-at-9.59.18-PM-300x168.png 300w, http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-07-29-at-9.59.18-PM-1024x574.png 1024w, http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-07-29-at-9.59.18-PM.png 1434w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 693px) 100vw, 693px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some keywords score well because they&#8217;re &#8220;low-hanging fruit&#8221;, others because they&#8217;re very high value.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Note that keywords have a High ROI for different reasons. Some, like &#8220;baby yoga DVD&#8221; are low-hanging fruit: keywords that should be very easy for this site to rank for, and thus are worth targeting even if they don&#8217;t deliver a ton of traffic. Others, like &#8220;pregnancy yoga dvd&#8221;, are a bit more competitive, but could be worth the extra difficulty. YogaDVDs.net is a small site that&#8217;s doing a lot right, so it has some high Ranking Probability scores within its niche. Don&#8217;t be discouraged if your highest ROI keyword opportunities score\u00a0lower: as your traffic\u00a0grows and your site improves, you&#8217;ll become competitive for more and more valuable terms.<\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve found a keyword that looks to be worth targeting, click on the Ranking Probability score to check out the full Report and better understand how your\u00a0site compares to the competition. Then\u00a0check the <a href=\"http:\/\/canirank.freshdesk.com\/support\/solutions\/articles\/111479-what-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Issues<\/a> section of the Report to see what you would need to improve in order to be competitive. If the changes seem doable and consistent with your\u00a0overall marketing plans, \u00a0click &#8220;Build an Action Plan&#8221; to have CanIRank generate instructions\u00a0for how you can fix your\u00a0site&#8217;s Issues and improve your\u00a0competitiveness. That Action Plan then becomes the basis of your\u00a0promotional campaign once you&#8217;ve built a page targeting the keyword.
