{"id":1826,"date":"2016-11-21T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-21T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.canirank.com\/blog\/?p=1826"},"modified":"2020-11-25T10:50:15","modified_gmt":"2020-11-25T18:50:15","slug":"analysis-of-political-bias-in-internet-search-engine-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.canirank.com\/blog\/analysis-of-political-bias-in-internet-search-engine-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Does Google have a political bias?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although internet search engines like Google play an increasingly prominent role shaping voter opinions and perception of issues and candidates, their ranking algorithms aren\u2019t designed to provide a fairly balanced or completely honest representation of controversial issues.<\/p>\n<p>In order to assess how fairly search engine results portray political candidates and controversial issues, we collected over 1,200 URLs ranking highly in Google.com for politically-charged keywords such as \u201c<strong>gun control<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>abortion<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>TPP<\/strong>\u201d, and \u201c<strong>Black Lives Matter<\/strong>\u201d. Each URL was then assessed for political slant by politically active individuals from both the left and right. Finally, we used CanIRank\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canirank.com\/\">SEO software<\/a> to analyze how each URL compared in dozens of different ranking factors to determine whether Google\u2019s algorithm treated websites similarly regardless of their political slant.<\/p>\n<p>Among our key findings were that top search results were almost<strong> 40% more likely to contain pages with a \u201cLeft\u201d or \u201cFar Left\u201d slant<\/strong> than they were pages from the right. Moreover, <strong>16% of political keywords contained no right-leaning pages<\/strong> at all within the first page of results.<\/p>\n<p>Our analysis of the algorithmic metrics underpinning those rankings suggests that factors within the Google algorithm itself may make it easier for sites with a left-leaning or centrist viewpoint to rank higher in Google search results compared to sites with a politically conservative viewpoint.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Web Search Matters to Democracy<\/h2>\n<p>This fall, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/195542\/americans-trust-mass-media-sinks-new-low.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gallup reported that Americans\u2019 trust in mass media<\/a><\/span>\u00a0had hit an all time low, with fewer than a third of the population saying they have a great deal or a fair amount of trust in mass media &#8212; such as newspapers, TV, and radio.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a direct result of this distrust in traditional mass media, Americans are increasingly turning to online sources for their information.<\/p>\n<p>According to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkwithgoogle.com\/articles\/mobile-search-consumer-behavior-data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent Google findings<\/a><\/span>, <strong>online search is the resource that 87% of the population turns to first<\/strong> when a question arises.<\/p>\n<p>Online search plays a particularly prominent role in the democratic process during election season. During the 2012 election cycle, a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/109640411\/Google-Voters-Research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey of persuadable voters<\/a><\/span>\u00a0revealed that 49% get their news about campaigns and the election online, largely through search engines like Google, and that these voters generally trust the information they find online.<\/p>\n<p>Top search results are broadly perceived as being the most accurate and authoritative by members of the public with the first five search results accounting for an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advancedwebranking.com\/ctrstudy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">estimated 67% of all clicks<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and the first three results alone accounting for over 55% of all clicks.<\/p>\n<p>In their <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/aibrt.org\/downloads\/EPSTEIN_&amp;_ROBERTSON_2015-The_Search_Engine_Manipulation_Effect-SEME-PNAS-w_SUPPLEMENTS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015 study<\/a><\/span>, Robert Epstein and Ronald Robertson concluded that the order of search results can have a big impact on voter behavior &#8212; and in the event of a close election, this effect could even be profound enough to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/08\/googles-search-algorithm-steal-presidency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">determine the outcome of the election<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The extent to which a single private company now controls the flow of information is unprecedented in a country historically characterized by pluralistic and ideologically diverse media. This trend is particularly troubling when one considers that the employees of this\u00a0private company do not reflect\u00a0the ideological diversity of the country at large, and have consistently been amongst the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/politics\/article\/largest-source-donations-Hillary-Clinton-campaign-10414834.php#photo-8834751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">largest donors<\/a> to Democratic party candidates.<\/p>\n<h2>Should Search Engines Be Required to Give Equal Time?<\/h2>\n<p>Fairly presenting both sides of an issue has been considered essential to a functioning democracy since the very early years, when America\u2019s founding fathers <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.press.uillinois.edu\/books\/catalog\/68hgg5er9780252031045.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">used subsidies<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to support the development and survival of a diverse media corps. Since 1927, radio and later television broadcast stations have been required to give equal time to opposing political candidates. For many years, the Fairness Doctrine required media to present both sides of controversial issues in an honest and equitable manner, a standard that many journalists still aspire to.<\/p>\n<p>Now that web search has largely superseded radio and television as the primary source of information for most Americans, should web search results also be expected\u00a0to present both sides of an issue?<\/p>\n<p>In our sample set of over 2,000 search results, we found that searchers are <strong>39%<\/strong>\u00a0more likely to be presented information with a left-leaning bias than they are information from the right.<\/p>\n<p>But for some keywords, the search results are even more egregious. Does it make sense, for example, that someone researching \u201c<strong>Republican platform<\/strong>\u201d should be presented only the official text of the platform and seven left-leaning results highly critical of that platform, with zero results supporting it?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1854\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/republican-platform-search-results.png\" alt=\"republican-platform-search-results\" width=\"300\" height=\"639\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/republican-platform-search-results-141x300.png 141w, http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/republican-platform-search-results-200x426.png 200w, http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/republican-platform-search-results.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For other controversial keywords like \u201c<strong>minimum wage<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>abortion<\/strong>,\u201d \u201c<strong>NAFTA<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>Iraq war<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>campaign finance reform<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>global warming<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>marijuana legalization<\/strong>\u201d, \u00a0and \u201c<strong>tpp<\/strong>\u201d, no right-leaning websites are to be found among the top results.<\/p>\n<p>Search results for keywords like \u201c<strong>Hillary Clinton seizures<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Hillary Clinton sick<\/strong>\u201d, on the other hand, were dominated by right-leaning websites and YouTube footage.<\/p>\n<p>The proportion of results with\u00a0a\u00a0<em>left-leaning bias<\/em>\u00a0increased for top ranking results, which typically receive the majority\u00a0of clicks. For example, we found that search results denoted as demonstrating a left or far left slant received 40% more exposure in the\u00a0top 3 ranking spots than search results considered to have a right or far right political slant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"political-slant-google-top3-results\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/7d0fb88c-84b0-4d78-a0ae-b965721dbafb_top3searchresults.jpg\" alt=\"Political slant in Google's top 3 search results\" width=\"1600\" height=\"874\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Content with a left or far left viewpoint receives even more exposure in the top five search results. Searchers are 65% more likely to encounter liberal search results than they are conservative search results if they look at the first five returns to their query. Assuming typical click distributions, that means only\u00a01\u00a0out of 10 searchers would end up clicking on a result with a conservative viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"political-slant-google-top5\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/5f432f89-b32e-4f3a-acfd-ffc4a3cbd36d_top5searchresults201.jpg\" alt=\"Political slant in Google's top 5 search results\" width=\"1280\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Why do sites from the left feature more prominently in Google\u2019s search results?<\/h2>\n<p>Google considers about 200 major ranking factors in their algorithm to determine which results to serve a user in response to a search query. In order to calculate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canirank.com\/blog\/best-keyword-difficulty-metric\/\">accurate keyword difficulty scores<\/a>, our software collects and analyzes many of those same factors, allowing us to gain some insight into why certain pages rank where they do. Of these many factors, Google has identified <strong>links<\/strong> (i.e., the number and quality of links pointing to a page) and <strong>content<\/strong> (i.e., relevancy and comprehensiveness) to be the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/now-know-googles-top-three-search-ranking-factors-245882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two most important ranking factors<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3>Average number of external links<\/h3>\n<p>Based on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canirank.com\/blog\/best-keyword-difficulty-metric\/\">previously documented correlations<\/a><\/span>\u00a0between specific ranking factor metrics analyzed by CanIRank and actual search rankings, we would expect top ranked search results to have more external links compared to lower ranked search results.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, <strong>pages demonstrating a left or far left political slant\u00a0made it into the top results with significantly fewer external links<\/strong>\u00a0compared to pages rated balanced. Pages with a right-leaning slant needed significantly more links to make it into the top results.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"number-external-links-political-slant\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1e1ab036-6406-45a7-80ed-24bb5a873513_external20links20to20make20top5.jpg\" alt=\"Number of external links needed to make top 5 Google results, by political slant\" width=\"1280\" height=\"701\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Median content length<\/h3>\n<p>Content length is another metric that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quicksprout.com\/2012\/12\/20\/the-science-behind-long-copy-how-more-content-increases-rankings-and-conversions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tends to correlate<\/a><\/span>\u00a0with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canirank.com\/blog\/5-seo-best-practices-for-high-ranking-small-business-blogs\/\">higher rankings<\/a>, as it indicates a greater depth of information on a subject. For example, small businesses and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canirank.com\/blog\/seo-for-startups\/\">startups<\/a> are often able to rank well despite having fewer links, if they provide more comprehensive content on a specific topic.<\/p>\n<p>Among our sample list of search results, <strong>right-leaning pages had a higher median number of words<\/strong> across all 40 results compared to both neutral and left-leaning pages. Despite this, neutral and left-leaning pages represented a greater proportion of top search results.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"median-words-search-results\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/9c67d121-0cc5-49f7-9ecc-0685b5213456_mediumofwords.jpg\" alt=\"Median number of words in search results, by political slant\" width=\"1280\" height=\"701\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to external links and content length, we analyzed a host of other ranking factors including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>keyword usage in title, body, headings, img alt tags, and other HTML tags<\/li>\n<li>related term usage in each of the above areas<\/li>\n<li>number of indexed pages of the ranking website<\/li>\n<li>relevancy of indexed pages to keyword topic<\/li>\n<li>relevancy of home page<\/li>\n<li>relevancy of the ranking website\u2019s domain name<\/li>\n<li>number of external and internal links to page and website<\/li>\n<li>MozRank, MozTrust<\/li>\n<li>Page Authority and Website Authority<\/li>\n<li>Facebook shares\/ likes\/ comments, tweets, +1s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No discernible pattern emerged when looking at many of these factors. The evidence, we conclude, is not strong enough to prove an inherent bias within Google\u2019s algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>Though Google would like to portray itself as a fair and balanced arbiter of facts \u2014 a role it has recently tried to strengthen with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/2016\/10\/14\/google-to-fact-check-online-news-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launch of a fact checking mechanism<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 searchers should be aware that ranking algorithms don\u2019t currently incorporate an assessment of political bias or even factual accuracy. No attempt is made to present multiple viewpoints on controversial political issues, and the algorithm in its current form does not return results equally distributed across the entire political spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Methodology<\/h2>\n<p>To ascertain whether Google search results showed a political bias, we created a list of 50 politically-relevant keywords, which together receive over 20 million monthly searches.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1tKZsxs0UCWXV31xV53VtTPJi93sWNhwSaFlvbIcBfvc\/pubhtml?gid=0&amp;single=true&amp;widget=true&amp;headers=false\" width=\"300\" height=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After harvesting the URLs from the first 4 pages of Google.com&#8217;s search results for each keyword (with personalization features turned off), and then discarding any URLs where we were unable to collect data (mostly due to the limitations of Moz&#8217;s Linkscape index, our source for inbound link metrics), we were left with 1,207 URLs.<\/p>\n<p>Next, we invited scorers from both sides of the political spectrum to assign a political slant score on a 1-5 scale to each individual URL, where:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1<\/strong> represents content that demonstrates a heavy bias toward views aligned with the Democrat party or a progressive ideology<\/li>\n<li><strong>2<\/strong> represents content that demonstrates some bias toward views aligned with the Democrat party or a progressive ideology<\/li>\n<li><strong>3<\/strong> represent content that is neutral or balanced<\/li>\n<li><strong>4<\/strong> represents content that demonstrates some bias toward views aligned with the Republican party or a conservative ideology<\/li>\n<li><strong>5<\/strong> represents content that demonstrates a heavy bias toward views aligned with the Republican party or a conservative ideology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite the large divide in our current political climate, our scorers were in agreement as to the degree and direction of bias for about half of the results, and were within 1 point on approximately 90%. In order to determine a consensus score for our analysis, we used an average of the political slant scores. The results were largely consistent with the political bias scores determined using a different methodology in a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/research.facebook.com\/blog\/exposure-to-diverse-information-on-facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook Research study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1847 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/150512_FT_FBShares-chart.jpg.CROP_.original-original.jpg\" alt=\"political content according to Facebook shares\" width=\"590\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/150512_FT_FBShares-chart.jpg.CROP_.original-original-200x156.jpg 200w, http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/150512_FT_FBShares-chart.jpg.CROP_.original-original-300x234.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/150512_FT_FBShares-chart.jpg.CROP_.original-original-400x313.jpg 400w, http:\/\/blog.canirank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/150512_FT_FBShares-chart.jpg.CROP_.original-original.jpg 590w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In order to better understand <em>why<\/em> each URL ranks where it does, we used CanIRank\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canirank.com\">SEO Competitive Analysis software<\/a> to collect data on over 200 ranking factors for each URL ranking in the Google search results for these keywords.<\/p>\n<p>The data collected by CanIRank\u2019s software is intended to assess the relative strengths of a given URL for each of the major ranking factors that determine the ordering of results by internet search engines. Previous research has shown that CanIRank\u2019s assessment of a URL\u2019s competitiveness has an approximately 60% rank order correlation with the results ranking on Google.com. Most metrics analyzed by CanIRank fall into one of 7 major Ranking Factor areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Page Relevancy<\/strong>: relevancy of the specific page to the keyword<\/li>\n<li><strong>Website Relevancy<\/strong>: relevancy of the entire website to the keyword<\/li>\n<li><strong>Page External Relevancy<\/strong>: relevancy and strength of links to the specific URL<\/li>\n<li><strong>Website External Relevancy<\/strong>: relevancy and strength of links to the entire website<\/li>\n<li><strong>Page Strength<\/strong>: trust and authority of the specific URL<\/li>\n<li><strong>Website Strength<\/strong>: trust and authority of the entire website<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social<\/strong>: popularity of the page on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples of some of the data points we collected and analyzed are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>keyword usage in title, body, headings, img alt tags, and other HTML tags<\/li>\n<li>related term usage in each of the above areas<\/li>\n<li>content length<\/li>\n<li># indexed pages from each domain<\/li>\n<li>relevancy of indexed pages to keyword topic<\/li>\n<li>relevancy of home page<\/li>\n<li>relevancy of domain name<\/li>\n<li># external and internal links to the ranking page and website overall<\/li>\n<li>Moz\u2019s MozRank, Page Authority and Domain Authority<\/li>\n<li>Facebook shares\/ likes\/ comments, tweets, Google +1s, LinkedIn shares, Pinterest Pins<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, we assessed the strength of individual and aggregated ranking metrics relative to the URL\u2019s actual ranking for each of our 5 political slant scores (Far Left, Left, Center, Right, Far Right). Although Google\u2019s search ranking algorithm is non-linear and third-party metrics are at best a rough approximation of the data they use internally, in general and in aggregate, higher ranking results score higher\u00a0in most ranking factor metrics.
